The War to End All Wars [Hetalia] by HeroicPlights The War to End All Wars [Hetalia] by HeroicPlights
(Inspired by the poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" and especially by "Break of Day in the Trenches").
I'm sorry to Belgium, Ottoman Empire, Canada, and all other nations involved in WWI that don't appear here! I didn't have the time to draw all of them.

~~~~I drew it for the contest at #HetaliaFanGroup, where the theme was "uniforms" ~~~~~
I wanted to showcase some of the uniforms from The Great War, 1914-1918, because there's a serious lack of WWI Hetalia art. I did a lot more research than I expected to get these uniforms fairly accurate, though I didn't catch every single detail, and there are so many variations of different uniforms that I picked a few to model off of xD For some FUN info, keep reading!
Austro-Hungarian Empire: Background is the flag of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at least during the time of The Great War. Austria's uniform is a higher officer's uniform, Hungary's is an infantry uniform.
Russia: Background is the flag that, from what I gathered, was most used from 1914-1917. he's wearing a cavalry uniform. Oh yeah. Carrying a Russian/Soviet M91 rifle.
France: Background is the French flag, it's the same! He's wearing the "horizon blue" uniform that was worn after ditching the red pants, apparently. I'm not sure what position he is, but all that matters is that he look beautiful in his uniform, non?
Germany: Prussia: "Fine, little bro, it's your first big war, YOU can be the general." And so Germany is wearing an early general's uniform. Prussia's got the standard coat, and the pickelhaube hat of awesomeness, complete with the eagle seal. He's carrying the German Mauser.
Britain: Flag is the same. Had to give him the helmet. He's just wearing the basic uniform the British always wear in WWI movies when they're in the trenches, the uniform of somewhere with lower ranking, or someone during the battle rather than a ceremonial outfit. Carrying the Lee-Enfield.
America: Flag has 48 stars on it, because there were not yet 50 American states! I also forgot to colour part of his gun the strap) so I'll have to go fix that, but he's carrying the US Springfield 1903. He's wearing the "doughboy" uniform that the American Expeditionary Force wore fresh off the boats in 1917.
Italy: Background is the flag of the kingdom of Italy, though if this is not accurate just say and I'll change it, because I didn't have time to double check the sources. Romano came out like shit, but I drew this one in like 5 hours because I had to post this picture before the contest deadline. His uniform is based off field artillery, because I like that one, and Italy's is the more standard infantary uniform. I don't remember the name of his rifle =/
And that, my friends, is The Great War. Sort of. This thing totally didn't turn out the way I'd pictured =/
If you want to use this image for any sort of Hetalia video or thing, go for it, just credit me and/or let me know if you do because, you know, that'd be cool =D
I do dis too much..
Demons run when a good man goes to war
Night will fall and drown the sun
When a good man goes to war
Friendship dies and true love lies
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war
Demons run, but count the cost
The battle’s won, but the child is lost
When a good man goes to war
I like very much the uniforms. :) Pity they were used for a war.
Nice work! (I've downloaded it in my phone, because it's just ... so cool, that I needed, even when I don't have the computer)
This is really good! But I'm taking history right now, and even though you still did a good job doing the two Italies...
Before the war, Italy was part of the Triple Alliance. Almost as soon as the war started, they backed out and became neutral. Ottoman Empire replaced them.
This really is a great show of the uniforms of important actors of the Great War, so detailed and well done.
The Reichskriegsfahne (Empire's-War-Flag) for Germany and Prussia instead of the standard black-white-red national flag of the German Empire is also fitting in this case.
This piece isn't about pointing out who did the most/more of the fighting or had more involvement, it was just about showcasing some of the uniforms for a uniform contest. I'm well aware I didn't include everyone. I didn't have time to draw everybody nor did I have great reference pictures for every single nation involved. You're right, Belgium really held their own against the Germans. I'd have liked to draw more, but this is all I did. I didn't intentionally leave anyone out because I thought they were less deserving though, certainly not. That wasn't the point of this picture.
Sorry if I sound blunt. I don't mean to, but you're probably the millionth person to ask "what about so-and-so" and I'm really tired of replying to this type of thing since it's been over a year since I drew this mediocre piece of art anyway hah.
Well if I was writing a history book and neglected to mention Ottoman Empire, then I'd say you could definitely call me out on that, but I didn't FORGET. I consciously decided not to draw him, though originally I did want to include him but ran out of time in the end. It would've been nice to have him here, though, I agree, but I had very limited time and references to begin with. If it makes you feel better, we can assume Ottoman Empire is off rocking his kickass uniform somewhere else not on this page. But do not fret, I could never forget dear Ottoman Empire, after all this was the war that essentially ended it =/
This Might be me but I don't think America should be There. Because of 3 things.
1) America joined the war in 1917. So the Americans only Ford one Year of the war.
2) When the Americans Soldiers were in France they needed 6 Months of training There.
3) they didn't Brought Aircraft, tanks, Artillery, Armoured cars and not Enough Machine guns. So The British and French had to Give some of There Weapons to them.
I did know those things, yes. Even so, Americans did still fight and die in the war *shrugs* and they had their own uniforms, so I put America here in this uniform lineup. And like you said, they went through six months of training in France and were given some of the Allies' weaponry, so obviously they were still involved, even if they showed up pretty late and mooched off of their allies lol.
In general, when it comes to a nations' level of involvement in a war, I don't want to say "this one shouldn't be here" or "these guys didn't do as much" because if any citizen of that country paid the ultimate price of their own lives, then I don't want to deny those people the recognition. Though there are many nations I didn't include in this picture, that's certainly not because I think they're less important or contributed less. Anyway, this war changed the entire world in so many ways and re-arranged international politics greatly--It is strange to think that before this war, the center of the world (economically, at least) was London, but after this war it switched to be New York City. I guess you could say America's significance here comes less from how long it was involved in actual combat, and more from the fact that this war "pushed them to the top" in a way; essentially the origins of America as a 'superpower' begin with this war, when everyone owed them money afterward =/ (Depression came shortly after, but that's a different story lol).
But as I was drawing this I wasn't thinking about who was most important anyway. I was mostly concerned with the fact that it was an international war, many died on all sides, it sucked, and this war really displayed the last of the flashy combat uniforms, because soon enough they learned that practicality was more important than impressing the enemy with your sense of military fashion O_O
You do have a Point and You are right. All I was saying was my Point of view. But Even though thay did Very little in the First World War. They Really helped out in the Second World War. But they may have Taken too Much Credit. What I mean is they won one Third of the war. But that's a other story.
I'm curious though WHY you didn't draw Canada, I mean, I know you said you didn't have the time to draw everyone, but Canada had a bigger impact on WWI then most everyone else did, and an especially bigger impact on the Great War then the US did.
Hell the Germans were outright terrified of Canadian Troops, and most people nowadays almost always refuse to even go as far as acknowledge that.
Well in terms of Hetalia, I really enjoy Alfred/America's character so I wanted to draw him (I like Matthew/Canada too of course, though), and being American I already had a better idea of what their uniforms were like. I wasn't trying to document history here, I just wanted to draw some uniforms, it was for a silly uniform contest oTZ
I like reading about WWI though, I do know about the Canadians' important roles, although I'm sure I don't know as much as an actual Canadian, but either way, I'm not deliberately trying to ignore any countries who were vital in the war, and I try not to be ignorant about these matters in general, so I apologise if it comes across that way and offends you. I don't begrudge you for voicing your concerns though, it's just that nowadays I think this is such a stupid little picture anyway (I'd like to re-do it actually), so when people comment on it over the historical validity, my head just falls to my desk lol. And hey maybe if I do re-do it I'll spend some more time adding in more countries, like Canada.
I would like to use the France portion of this picture in a video, because it's kind of difficult to find France holding a gun in a picture on his own (without all the other Allies crowded around him). I may not remember to credit you specifically, though, however. I may not finish the video for a couple months, and with a potential few hundred pictures in the video, it is likely that I shall forget.
